Reindeer People

Hello everyone,

I thought you might be interested in the attached pictures and a little information on them. You are probably aware that large numbers of reindeer have been herded north of Kharyaga for centuries, all up and down the coast by the Nenets people. SeverTEK’s project area, which is northwest of Kharyaga about 100 kms. is right in the middle of the winter grazing grounds and so we see these people and their animals quite a bit in the winter.

August 2nd is Reindeer People’s day, and SeverTEK donated a lot of food, prizes and helicopter time to the Nenets to help them collect their people together at one central remote location near the Arctic coast, to celebrate this event with reindeer races, a concert and a large feast. Four of us attended the function from SeverTEK, two of them from the Environmental Department, Slava Petrovskiy and myself. We took a tent with us and camped out for the night of the 2nd.
